It was a little more than a year ago that I started working with Lane indirectly. Most of our interaction had been by telephone and it was about two months after the loss of Rabi that we finally met in person.

When I first found out about the accident it reminded me of my own experience of loosing a newborn two years before. I remember thinking at that time about what he and his family must be going through. I also remember thinking of how honorable people always seem to carry the heaviest burdens in life.

Such challenges in life could make us conclude that the noble path has no value. That to dedicate ourselves to the service of others and the betterment of humanity has no value. I think those of us who know Lane, either personally or through reputation like myself, also know that he has not waivered.

It is encouraging indeed to find examples of people who demonstrate strength when they are faced with challenges in life. Who can demonstrate that one the greatest assets of being human is our ability to conquer adversity and at the same time show compassion for other human beings.

That in and of itself is noble!!
